LED Display Power Supply & SMPS Guide
Understanding power consumption, SMPS specifications, and redundant power design.
The power supply unit (PSU) — specifically the Switched Mode Power Supply (SMPS) — converts mains AC power to the low-voltage DC required by LED modules. Specifying the wrong power supply causes display failures, fire hazards, and voided warranties. This guide covers everything you need to know.
Key Facts at a Glance
- Standard SMPS
- Meanwell or Lifud — industry-standard brands for LED displays
- Typical output
- 4.6V or 5V DC
- Power per m² (indoor P2)
- 400–600W average, 1,200W peak
- Power per m² (outdoor P6)
- 600–900W average, 1,800W peak
- Redundancy
- N+1 power supply configuration for mission-critical displays
LED Power Consumption Calculations
Power consumption depends on pixel pitch, display content, and brightness level. LED displays consume peak power when displaying full white (all LEDs on at maximum) and minimum power in standby or displaying black content. For infrastructure planning, always specify peak power consumption — typically 3× average power consumption. For a 10 × 4 metre P2 indoor display: 40 m² × 600W/m² peak = 24kW peak draw. This requires a dedicated 3-phase 32A circuit.
| Display Type | Avg Power (W/m²) | Peak Power (W/m²) | Typical SMPS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fine pitch indoor P1.5 | 300 – 400 | 900 – 1,200 | Meanwell LRS-350-5 |
| Indoor P2 – P3 | 400 – 600 | 1,200 – 1,500 | Meanwell SE-600-5 |
| Outdoor P4 – P6 | 600 – 900 | 1,800 – 2,500 | Meanwell RSP-1000-5 |
| Outdoor P8 – P10 | 300 – 600 | 900 – 1,800 | Lifud LF-GF200YA |
Redundant Power Supply Design
For mission-critical displays in command centers, airports, and 24/7 commercial applications, N+1 power redundancy is essential. This means each cabinet has an additional backup SMPS that activates automatically if the primary fails — preventing dark panels during business-critical operations. Yotta Pixel designs all command center and 24/7 retail installations with N+1 redundancy as standard.
Never use generic or uncertified power supplies in LED display installations. Non-BIS-certified SMPS units in Indian installations are a fire hazard and will void the display manufacturer's warranty. Always specify Meanwell or Lifud with valid BIS certification.
Frequently Asked Questions
What power supply rating do I need for a 10 sqm P2 indoor display?
For a 10 m² P2 indoor display: peak power = 10 m² × 1,200W/m² = 12kW peak. You'll need a dedicated single-phase 63A circuit or 3-phase 25A circuit. Specify at least 12kW of SMPS capacity across all cabinets.
Can I run an LED display on a standard 15A socket?
Only for very small displays (under 1.5 m² indoor). Any display larger than 1.5 m² requires a dedicated circuit. All Yotta Pixel projects include an electrical load calculation and dedicated circuit specification.
