LED Display Viewing Distance: Calculator & Guide
How to calculate minimum and optimal viewing distances for any LED display.
Viewing distance is the most practical specification when selecting an LED display. Get it wrong and viewers either see individual pixels (too close for the pitch) or the display appears soft and wasteful (pixel pitch finer than needed). This guide gives you the formulas, a reference table, and practical examples.
Key Facts at a Glance
- Minimum viewing distance
- Pixel pitch (mm) × 2 = metres
- Optimal viewing distance
- Pixel pitch (mm) × 3 = metres
- Maximum viewing distance
- Screen height × 30 (for comfortable reading)
- Human eye limit
- ~1 arc-minute — approximately 1 mm at 3.4 metres
The Viewing Distance Formulas
Three formulas define viewing distance for LED displays. (1) Minimum viewing distance: the closest point at which pixels are not individually visible — Pixel Pitch (mm) × 2 = Distance (metres). (2) Optimal viewing distance: the distance at which the display looks its absolute best — Pixel Pitch (mm) × 3 = Distance (metres). (3) Maximum viewing distance: determined by content legibility — for text-heavy content, maximum comfortable reading distance = Screen Height (metres) × 30.
| Pixel Pitch | Min Distance | Optimal Distance | Max Distance (2m screen) |
|---|---|---|---|
| P1.25 | 2.5 m | 3.75 m | 60 m |
| P1.5 | 3 m | 4.5 m | 60 m |
| P2 | 4 m | 6 m | 60 m |
| P2.5 | 5 m | 7.5 m | 60 m |
| P3 | 6 m | 9 m | 60 m |
| P4 | 8 m | 12 m | 60 m |
| P5 | 10 m | 15 m | 60 m |
| P6 | 12 m | 18 m | 60 m |
| P8 | 16 m | 24 m | 60 m |
| P10 | 20 m | 30 m | 60 m |
Practical Room Examples
Boardroom (10m × 6m): Farthest viewer at 8m. Formula: 8 ÷ 2 = P4 maximum pitch. For excellent quality: P2 or P2.5. Retail store (20m × 15m): Viewing distances from 3m to 15m. Specify P2.5 for close viewers; P3 acceptable. Stadium (200m viewing distance): P10 or P12. Digital billboard (minimum viewing from moving car at 30m): P6 – P8 optimal. Hotel lobby atrium (5m to 30m): P2.5 for close reception desk viewers.
For environments with wildly varying viewing distances (museum, airport, shopping mall), design for the minimum viewing distance. Viewers from further away will still see a perfect image — they just won't use the full resolution.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a P4 display if some viewers might be 2m away?
No. At 2m from a P4 display, pixels are clearly visible and the image looks pixelated. For viewers closer than 8m, always specify a pixel pitch where minimum viewing distance is less than or equal to the closest viewer's position.
What is the pixel pitch for a digital billboard on a highway?
Highway billboards are viewed from moving vehicles at 30–100 metres. P8 to P10 is optimal — delivering sufficient resolution at viewing distance while keeping cost manageable for large billboard areas.
